"Zu einer Zeit, in der die Kunstfotografie zunehmend inszeniert, manipuliert oder im Studio produziert wird, oder die Welt auf eine kühle, konzeptualisierte Art auf Distanz gehalten wird, hebt sich Grahams Arbeit als kontinuierliche Beobachtung und Befragung der Lebenswirklichkeit ab.
Das Museum Folkwang widmet dem britischen Fotografen Paul Graham (geb. 1956) die erste Retrospektive in Deutschland mit 11 großen, seit 1981 entstandenen Werkkomplexen. Die Ausstellung zeigt mit etwa 145 Bildern eine repräsentative Auswahl seiner Arbeit. Graham steht in der Tradition der sozialdokumentarischen Fotografie, die in England nach dem 2. Weltkrieg durch Bill Brandt geprägt und von Fotografen wie Chris Killip und John Davis weitergeführt wurde. In der Auseinandersetzung mit ihnen und mit der amerikanischen Fotografie der 60er und 70er Jahre entwickelte Graham ein innovatives, künstlerisches Werk, dessen Blick kompromisslos auf die soziale Wirklichkeit gerichtet ist."
