Yutaka Takanashi was one of the founding members of the group of phototgraphers that launched the influential photo magazine "Provoke" in 1968-1969. His first book, "Toshi-e (Towards the City)," was published in 1974. In a compartment in the back of the book, one finds a smaller book, "Tôkyô-jin," which seems to have provided the basis for the larger book. While he shows the real Tôkyô on the verge of becoming a modern urban society in "Tôkyô-jin" and names the concrete location of each photograph, Toshi-e is more of a fantasy: it shows an urban landscape that has no defined location. The new book, "Yutaka Takanashi, Photography 1965-74," presents a representative cross-section of these two pioneering photographic series in 35 full-page illustrations and 6 large format plates.
